The DSA Scholarship Fund will provide individual grants to people with Down syndrome who desire and intend to enroll or continue enrollment in a post-secondary program at an accredited college or university that will enhance their life through employment, independent living or life skills, or interests in any other areas.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
Filling out this application indicates that the applicant meets these requirements:
- The applicant is an individual from Alabama with Down syndrome who is at least 18 years old, or who will turn 18 by July 1 of the application year.
- The applicant has the intent to enroll or continue enrollment in a post-secondary program at a university or community college within the United States, with an IPSE (Inclusive Post-Secondary Education) program; it must be a program of or directly affiliated with an accredited institute of higher education (IHE) and they must support students with intellectual disability.
- Applicants will provide copies of a high school diploma or equivalent, a high school transcript if graduating in the spring of the application year or an acceptance to or current enrollment in an IPSE program.
- The scholarship funds must be applied toward tuition – funds can be used for housing, food, or transportation ONLY if these costs are already included as part of the IPSE programming fees. Separate payments will not be made for these accommodations.
- Funds must be paid directly to the institution. No reimbursements will be made to the individual or family.
- All scholarship funds must be used within one year.

STEP 1: FILL OUT THE APPLICATION

STEP 2: WRITE AND SUBMIT A PERSONAL ESSAY
Help us get to know you better! The essay or personal statement should come from your heart and be no longer than one page. Attach to your application form.
STEP 3: GET 2 LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Have anyone who knows you well write your letters. It could be a teacher, coach, therapist, best friend, employer, etc. Ask them each to keep their letter to one page. Must submit two letters of recommendation. Attach to your application form.
STEP 4: SUBMIT AT LEAST 1 DOCUMENTATION OF SUPPORTING MATERIALS
Submit at least one documentation of supporting materials that will help the scholarship committee see your authentic self and therefore, help in their deliberations. This may include artwork, videos, awards, pictures, employment history, advocacy, extracurricular activities, etc. In other words, this is the most important part of the application, so please use this to show us YOU! Attach to your application form.
STEP 5: SUBMIT A VIDEO INTERVIEW ANSWERING 5-7 OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
- Can you tell us about yourself and something you are really proud of?
(This could be a job, school, volunteering, sports, or something personal.) - If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
What do you like about that animal? - Why do you want to go to college or a post-secondary program?
What are you hoping to learn or experience there? - If you had to describe yourself as a color, what color would you choose?
What does that color say about you? - What is something you enjoy learning about or doing right now?
Why do you like it? - If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
Why does that song fit you? - Tell us about a time you worked hard to reach a goal.
What was challenging, and how did you keep going? - If you could teach a class about anything you love, what would you teach?
- What are your strengths?
- If you could have any job for one day, what would you want to try? Why?
- What is something you want to get better at, and how do you work on it?
- If you were part of a team or group, what role do you usually play?
(Leader, helper, encourager, organizer, creative ideas, etc.) - How do you like to spend your time outside of school or work?
(Hobbies, friends, family, sports, activities, or volunteering.) - What’s one word your family or friends would describe you as?
- Who is someone who supports you or encourages you, and how do they help you?
- What is something that always makes you smile or laugh?
- What does independence mean to you?
- Can you share something you do on your own that makes you feel confident?
- If you could design the perfect day, what would it look like from morning to night?
- How do you think this scholarship would help you reach your goals?
- If you could give one piece of advice to someone younger than you, what would you say?
- Tell us about a time you helped someone else or were part of a team.
What was your role? - What are you most excited about when you think about your future?
Attach your video interview to your application form.
All of the above requirements must be met to be considered for the DSA Scholarship.
Students may reapply for the scholarship each year throughout their enrollment; however, the scholarship is not a renewal, as the application process begins fresh each year. Previously awarded amounts are not guaranteed.
The DSA Scholarship Committee may require an additional interview via Zoom, conducted from March 10-12, but we will contact you as needed.
